The antiquity of this race hasn’t been confirmed yet by official sources, but the first records date back to 1.000 BC, in the area where Afghanistan, India and Pakistan are currently located. Used as a hunting dog, the Afghan Hound is the elegance personified. This unique and ancient breed of dogs has a very different appearance to any other: hiss spectacular silky coat, exotic face and thin build, this race has become famous for their elegant beauty.
Time for some Ruff Trivia:
– The first dog in history, which happened to be an Afghan Hound, was cloned in 2005, can you tell us what his name was?
o A: Max
o B: Laika
o C: Snuppy
What do you think, give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video.
With a soft and elegant lock that falls in half in the head of this dog, the Afghan Hound has a certain air to John Lennon. It’s a tall and stylized dog that can measure between 26 and 29 inches tall for males and between 24 and 27 inches for females. Although the standard of the International Cynological Federation doesn’t specify a weight for this breed, these animals usually weigh between 57 and 74 pounds. Also, it has beautiful and almost triangular eyes of majestic and distant expression. But, its most important feature is the very long, fine and silky coat that covers its entire body.
Because the fur is very thin, it’s usually easily entangled, so you should brush and comb several times a week and even daily. The Afghan Hound requires a lot of maintenance and, like all breeds, should have their nails trimmed and their teeth brushed regularly. Also, veterinarians recommend a monthly bath. This type of routines will help you to avoid potential health problems early.
Due to its dignified, independent and a little distant character, the Afghan Hound can be taken as a not very obedient dog and difficult to train, but the truth is that he is a very loyal and affectionate with its family. It’s definitely the best pet for huge families because he needs attention and a lot of time to play.
Thanks to their extreme loyalty to humans, they’re dogs quite easy to train, due to their innate desire to please their owners. Afghan Hounds are usually relaxed and quiet in the house, but outside of it, they’re naturally active and need to exercise every day, which includes walking or running with them.
Health: Afghan dogs are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they’re susceptible to certain health conditions. Hip dysplasia, paralysis (Myelopathy, fatal, occurs around six months) and cataracts, are some of the most common diseases. In addition, they’re especially sensitive to anesthesia, tranquilizers and cortisone, so they must have constant veterinary assistance. For this reason, you can now visit BrooklynsCorner.com to find the directory of the best Veterinarians and hospitals in your area.
Afghan Hound are considered as the “aristocrats” of the dog world because of their elegant appearance and distant attitude. But, although they aren’t usually the ideal profile to live with small children, they can get used to them if the bond between the two is supervised by an adult.
Find out if the Afghan Hound would be a good addition to your home. Now you can visit Brooklyn’s Corner.com to take our quiz and find out which dog would be the best match for you.
